Larry Taylor in front of house
The Larry Taylor Blues and Soul Band will bring their funky, hard hitting brand of 1950s big city blues and 1960s soul from the West Side of Chicago to wild wonderful West Virginia. Singer/drummer Larry Taylor is a driving force in the growing wave of West Side Soul—a heart-grabbing music that oozes out of tiny hole-in-the-wall joints and flows with the beat of the street. He learned his trade as a kid from Howlin’ Wolf’s drummers, his stepfather Eddie Taylor Sr. (the steady boogie guitar behind Jimmy Reed) and blues guys who stopped by their house including Elmore James, Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker. For 30 years he drummed behind all the greats of Chicago blues and recorded several of his own songs.
Taylor is dedicated to keeping the sounds of old-old-school blues and soul alive. He says, “Blues is just about the best music ever made. It’s the root of American popular music—not only R&B but rock, jazz, hiphop, gospel, even part of country music. Even to those who don’t think they know much about the blues, the music will sound familiar. Early rock’n’roll—Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Bo Diddley, and 1960s rock pioneer Jimi Hendrix—all grew their sounds directly from the fertile ground of Chicago blues. Like country music, blues songs tell stories of everyday fun, foiled romances, hard times and sorrows—all to a danceable beat set by the drums and electric bass. Instruments like electric guitars, piano and horns add their wails and laughs in solos in response to the singers.
As Larry brings back the mighty Mississippi attitude of the early Chicago blues of the 1950s and powerful soul songs of the 60s, Hampshire County’s own Barrelhouse Bonni, who has been piano player with the band for the past four years, will be with him on his visit to Romney.
