Insurance:
Getting harder to get all the time, but we've never failed, yet. Be prepared for minimal coverage for a small cabin in the mountains to cost far more than your main residence! You'll likely find it far cheaper to do business with one company for both your full-time home and weekend home. Throw in the cars, too. It may well pay to change it ALL to work with one company, although your agents may be in two different states. Many WV insurers are not taking new business at all right now. This changes often. Most insurers will not take a weekend home at all w/o other business as well. Some insurers will not take weekend homes if over 6 miles from the fire department. People seem to have the best success with these companies IF already doing business with them:

Insurance: Flood Coverage
You should be able to buy federal flood insurance from any LOCAL insurer. Many insurers have no experience with it, however. They will almost certainly require you to have your other insurance with them, as well. If you build within the 100 year flood plain, the cost of flood insurance will be inversely proportional to the height of your home above the theoretical flood elevation. Try to design your new home to be 5 or more feet above the 100 year flood level. Rough rule of thumb: one foot above flood = $1000/yr, while four feet above the 100 yr flood may be a third of that or less. In Keyser, Jack Floyd (Nationwide) will sell flood insurance without carrying your other insurance as well. He's at 304-788-4004.

DSL only available within 4 miles of the central phone company switching centers (Romney, Petersburg, Franklin, Maysville, Burlington, Capon Bridge, Levels, Moorefield and a few other areas).
